The easiest memories to lose are often the useful ones: where you ate, which trail you walked, when you last called someone, or what made a plain Tuesday feel better than expected.
Memstone works best when your activities are small enough to log without ceremony. A meal out can keep the restaurant and who came along. A walk can keep the route. A book can keep a note about why it landed at the right time.
Try starting with three ordinary activities you already repeat. The shape of your real life will appear quickly once the first few entries are in place.
Here are some that I’ve recorded this week:
- Went for a walk
- Daily walk with my daughter to school, and notes on some of the things I learned along the way about what she’s looking forward to or apprehensive about.
- Lunchtime walks in the local woods, to the supermarket, or around our local park.
- The new book I started reading
- “Think Like a Stoic” by Ken Mogi.
- Cooked a meal (my wife cooked the rest of the meals)
- Black bean chilli (mild to accommodate my wife and kids!)
- Roasted red pepper pasta
- Pakistani potato and spinach curry (next time I’ll add some raisins)
